Dog Aggression – How to Prevent Your Dogs Aggression Towards Strangers
Aggression Towards Strangers
We all know the signs. Your dog starts to fidget around strange people. Then they get real jumpy, they can’t sit still, they pace, they bark, etc. you get the idea. This dog behavior is very unsettling for the owner and can sometimes keep you from taking your dog out on walks so they can get their exercise. The major reason your dog doesn’t like strangers is that they have never had the chance to get used to them. It is crucial that you socialize your dog. By socializing your dog, you’re getting them to learn through experience that new sights and sounds are fun, not scary. Telling him to “Settle Down” is not going to convince him that everything is OK. They have to learn that for themselves.
When Do You Start Socializing Your Dog
The time you should start introducing your dog socially is when they are puppies. The more types of people and animals they meet (babies, toddlers, teenagers, old people, men, women, people wearing uniforms, people wearing motorcycle helmets, people carrying umbrellas, etc) in a fun and relaxed environment, the more at ease and happy they’ll be in general.
How To Socialize Them
Socializing your dog is pretty easy to do. First, take them to a puppy preschool. This is a series of easy group-training classes for puppies with about ten or so puppy owners getting together with a qualified trainer (usually there are at least two trainers present). The best part of puppy preschool is the play sessions. Several times throughout the class, the puppies are encouraged to run around off-leash and play amongst themselves. This is an ideal environment for them to learn good social skills. There are several unfamiliar dogs present (which teaches them how to interact with strange dogs), there are several unfamiliar people present (which teaches them that new faces are nothing to be afraid of), and the environment is safe and controlled. Socialization doesn’t just stop with puppy preschool. It’s an ongoing effort throughout the life of your puppy and dog. They need to be taken to several new places and environments. Remember not to overwhelm them. Just start off slow and build up their tolerance gradually.
