You can get screwed buying from either a dealer or a private party, you just have to know the value of what you are looking at. Also you want to be able to assess the level of wear and tear and any signs of damage. So if you can’t check it, get someone who can.
When buying a motorcycle look for one with low miles, preferably under 5000. And then when you buy it get it serviced first thing, unless you know for sure the seller followed service guidelines.
